WE ASKED THE DESIGN IN A BOX EXPERTS ABOUT THE POPULAR INDUSTRIAL TREND AND HOW TO INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR SPACE:
The industrial style is mostly characterized by using raw, unfinished or natural textures and finishes in a space. Instead of hiding it, raw building materials like concrete and brick are exposed to help create beautiful features, often complemented with other materials such as artisanal wood or metal surfaces. The combination of neutral colour palettes with bold interior pieces, not only chosen for aesthetics, but also functionality, makes for an interesting shell that can (like any good clothing piece) be dressed up or down. Joinery with unusual hardware elements or the use of exposed copper plumbing piping, can successfully be used in the mix. It might even be a perfect project for the DIY-type person.
A great way to incorporate some industrial style elements into an existing space, is by creating feature walls with exposed brick cladding, plastered concrete, wallpaper or dramatic paint effects. Concrete walls or features can either be polished or sealed to achieve a high gloss finish or left naturally matte for a rustic appeal. You can use concrete or concrete look-alike surfaces on floors, countertops, sinks, fireplaces etc to help create the desired look. Introducing joinery, furniture or lighting features with your favourite rustic metal, timber or distressed, weathered finishes, will instantly help you transform your space. It is important to soften your industrial style with comfortable contemporary furniture and soft window treatments to create a warm and cosy space.
