Guest blogger, Marcia Margolius from SA Decor and Design, talks about the different popular surface choices on the market, and how Caesarstone‘s different. Today, we’re talking quality countertops for your home where superior countertops are a must-have to last a lifetime and increase your property’s value.
What are the available countertops?
Often referred to as engineered stone countertops, quartz is one of the toughest countertops available today. Caesarstone is the original quartz surface – a polished, luxurious surface that oozes sophistication. Its durability, eco-friendly ratings, and lifetime warranty make it the top selection for just about any project. With the widest selection of colours, Caesarstone is the benchmark standard for countertops brands.
A popular choice, granite is both durable and easy to clean. Granite offers a natural surface that’s also heat resistant. But this surface is susceptible to burning and thermal shock – so make sure to protect your granite countertops. As each slab is unique with natural patterns, it’s difficult to achieve a uniform look in a big area. Granite also requires careful installation as it’s heavy and can crack if mishandled or cut incorrectly.
Solid surface countertops are man-made and usually composed of hard acrylic materials and polyester resins – ideal for seamless bathrooms and kitchens. Although a durable option, solid surface countertops are not heat resistant and may be prone to burns and scratches.
Marble offers timeless beauty and is widely available today. Unlike granite and other solid surfaces, marble is a softer material which may scratch easily. Before installation, you’d need to ensure your marble is sealed correctly by a fabricator. Also, you’ll need to keep up a regular maintenance plan with this surface to avoid stains.
Formica laminate countertops are made of plastic phenolic resins that are laminated onto layers of ordinary brown kraft paper. Then a printed decorative layer is added, topped by a wear-resistant layer. Finally, a thin and transparent melamine resin layer is added for protection. The end result is a look resembling natural stone or wood countertops. Delamination is a problem with laminate countertops, making repairs difficult.
A modern countertop finish, concrete is a great addition to any space. You can also customise your concrete counters so they’re poured right into the frame in your home, and then left to set. However, this can be an expensive option. Caesarstone has developed several concrete-inspired surfaces that offer a similar aesthetic, but without concrete’s porous nature.
Melamine laminate is a hard resin commonly used as an overlay for building materials like MDF or plywood. While the melamine itself is waterproof, the particle board underneath can distort the material if it becomes damp. Similarly, while melamine is very durable, it can chip if incorrectly installed or damaged when assembled.
Porcelain/sintered stone uses prime-quality raw materials for the slabs. The manufacturing system combines layers of coloured powders into the slab’s body, perfecting the appearance. Due to high temperatures and pressures during manufacturing processes, the porcelain countertops have a high resistance to scratches and heat.
Quality control is second nature to Caesarstone. We select only the finest raw materials, which go through a patented production process. The unrivalled expertise of our designers ensures excellence and quality. Resistant to stains, scratches, and cracks, Caesarstone surfaces are also highly heat-resistant.
